The South Dakotans – The Saga Continues
Our “DAKOTANS” left early Monday morning for the 37 mile drive from the Jefco Inn in Gordon, Nebraska to Pine Ridge Indian Health Service Hospital in South Dakota.
The dental unit is under the command of Dr. Jose Rodriguez, Captain, USPHS. Our students were provided with breakfast, an orientation and tour of the facility by Dr. Rodriguez.
This year’s externship to South Dakota was focused primarily upon prosthodontics; that is, our students were accompanied by a NJ Dental School faculty member (Dr. Asha Samant) whose specialty is the replacement of missing teeth with dentures, and a certified dental laboratory technician trained in denture fabrication (Ms. Eva Bober). While our students provided other types of dental treatment while at Pine Ridge, many patients left on Friday, smiling, with their new dentures.
